Istanbul, Turkey – “Syrian President Bashar al-Assad should be part of any solution to the Syrian crisis”, Steffan de Mistura, the Special Envoy of the United Nations to Syria, announced in a media statement after meeting with the Austrian foreign minister on Friday.
De Mistura said that the Syrian government still has authority over large areas of the country, and Syrian President Bashar al-Assad could contribute to the development of solutions that can lead to the end of the ongoing crisis in the country.
“When I say that Assad is part of the solution to the Syrian crisis, I am not talking about a final solution,” he said, adding that only the Syrian people have the right to decide on their future.
De Mistura announced that he would continue his visits to the capital Damascus for talks with the Syrian officials, including President Bashar al-Assad.
He also pointed out that the only solution in Syria should be achieved politically, because the continuation of the armed conflict does not serve the Syrians.
“The armed conflict only serves extremists of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS).”
The U.N. special envoy has recently visited Damascus, in an attempt to find a solution to the nearly four year crisis. De Mistura has earlier proposed a peace plan starting with “freezing” fighting in Aleppo, north of the country, between the Syrian regime military forces and armed opposition in order to open the path for humanitarian aid into the stricken areas, and taking that further to other war-torn cities and towns across the country.
