Hasakah, Syria – With the continued fighting between Syrian regime forces and militants loyal to the Islamic State in the countryside of Hasakah in northeastern Syria, the pro-regime military forces blocked the roads leading to the southern and western neighborhoods of the city.

Local sources told ARA News that the roads linking the city of Hasakah with the towns of Nashwa and Melabiya were blocked by pro-Assad army forces on Wednesday.

“Thus, pro-regime forces prevented access to the city from the western and southern entrances.”

Speaking to ARA News in Hasakah, civil rights activist Ahmed al-Husseini said that snipers of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) –stationed on the northern banks of the Khabur River– were able to repel militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS),  attempting to cross the river to enter areas held by the YPG forces in Hasakah.

“IS militants were feeling helpless in front of these YPG snipers despite their repeated attempts,” Husseini added.

Husseini explained that before IS advanced in the western countryside of the village of Tel Majdal near Hasakah, the YPG fighters asked villagers to stay in the village and help defend it against the militants because of its strategic location, “but the village’s headman refused the YPG’s request”.

“This eased the IS group’s task of gaining control of the village and displacing most of its residents, similar to what happened in most areas of the western countryside of Hasakah,” Husseini said.

This comes amid reports of the IS militants demanding residents of the Assyrian-majority village of Tel Hormuz in the western Hasakah either pay tribute or evacuate the area.

The destiny of dozens Assyrian families in Tel Hormuz is still uncertain, according to locals.
