Erbil, Kurdistan Region – The Ministry of the Peshmerga in the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) denied Sunday the Islamic State’s (IS/ISIS) claims of capturing 70 fighters of the Peshmerga.

Pro-IS activists reported that the IS group has captured 70 members of the Peshmerga forces and transferred then to the countryside of Hasakah in northeastern Syria.

Meanwhile, the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan (PUK) confirmed the loss of contact with at least 34 Peshmerga fighters –who are battling IS militants in several areas of Iraq and Syria.

The Syrian Observatory for Human Rights also reported the Islamic State’s arrest of 70 Peshmergas near the Syrian-Iraqi border.

“The captured Peshmergas were taken to the town of al-Hol and then to the IS major stronghold of Shaddadi city in Hasakah province,” the Observatory said on Sunday.

The Peshmerga forces have engaged in fierce battles with the IS radicals in many areas outside the Kurdistan Region of Iraq, such as Makhmur, Zammar, Sinjar, Kirkuk and Diyala.
