Kobane, Syria – On Thursday, sporadic clashes took place between the defending forces of Kobane in northern Syria and extremists of the Islamic State group (IS/ISIS) near the municipal square and in the vicinity of the cultural center in the city, local sources reported.
“Hit-and-run battles took place in al-Hal market and the industrial area in the northeastern parts of the city, during which casualties were reported among IS militants,” Kurdish fighters in Kobane told ARA News.
In the meantime, the U.S.-led international coalition’s warplanes bombed several IS-held locations in Kobane’s surrounding areas on Thursday evening.
Military sources said on Thursday that the coalition targeted Kanya Araban subdistrict east of Kobane, the village of Mazri Abroosh south of the city and the extremists’ strongholds in the vicinity of the village of Kolmed, military sources said.
The coalition’s attacks led to the destruction of heavy weapons belong to the IS group. The number of casualties is still unknown.
On the other hand, the Media Center of the People’s Protection Units (YPG) announced in an official statement on Thursday that the IS offensive against the city of Kobane continues and has entered its 66th day respectively.
According to the YPG’s MC, the militants shelled the city center with mortar fire on Thursday, “without causing any casualties”.
“Meanwhile, our units carried out an operation against IS sites in the eastern suburbs of Kobane, killing at least seven terrorists,” the statement added.
“Nine other IS terrorists were killed in southern Kobane during an attack by our fighters, backed by heavy artillery of the Peshmerga forces.”
The YPG’s Mecia Center also reported that one Kurdish fighter was killed and two other were injured during clashes with the IS militants in Kobane on Thursday.
