Damascus, Syria – Brigadier Zahir al-Saket, commander of the Military Council of the Free Syrian Army (FSA) in Aleppo, northern Syria, announced Tuesday that the council “will accept” for study the initiative submitted by the U.N. special envoy Steffan de Mistura.

De Mistura’s initiative requires halting military operations in a number of areas in Syria, especially in the city of Aleppo.

However, the FSA added conditions for considering de Mistura’s initiative of holding a cease fire “after the implementation of four demands of the (FSA’s) council”.

The conditions of the FSA council in Aleppo include the handing over the war criminals by the Assad regime, that used chemical weapons against civilians, without naming these criminals or to any party to be handed over.

“The terrorist sectarian militias must exit from Syria; Assad forces must stop shelling the residential neighborhoods in cities and towns; prisoners from the jails of the terrorist Bashar al-Assad must be released, especially women and children,” the other three conditions read in a statement by al-Saket.

On Saturday, the special U.N. envoy to Syria arrived in Damascus, carrying an initiative for ceasefire in specific areas of Syria, and met the Syrian President Bashar al-Assad, who described the initiative as “worthy studying”.

De Mistura suggested the city of Aleppo in northern Syria to be the first area for discussing this initiative.

On the other hand, the Syrian National Coalition for Revolutionary Forces and the Opposition (SNC) did not issue any official statements regarding its position on the initiative of de Mistura.
