Kobane, Syria – The spokesman of the U.S. Department of Defense (Pentagon), John Kirby, said that the Kurdish fighters combatting militants of the Islamic State (IS/ISIS) in Kobane showed surprising potential and determination.

Kirby emphasized the U.S. support to those fighters defending the city of Kobane against extremists of IS, saying that the resistance of the Kurdish forces in northern Syria seems spectacular.

“Their determination and willingness to fight against IS radicals in Kobane stirred the U.S. to support them (Kurdish forces),” Kirby said in an interview with al-Hurra TV on Thursday.

“The importance of Kobane for IS extremists stems from its strategic position. That’s why they are striving to control it,” he said.

Speaking to ARA News, Turkish journalist Kemal Ozgur said that in the past IS militants have easily controlled cities and towns in Iraq and Syria, “but the situation in Kobane seems quite different.”

“In Kobane, you see young Kurdish fighters defending their city tirelessly,” Ozgur said. “Although the quantity and quality of weaponry at both opposing sides is incomparable, as IS possesses heavy weapons and tanks; however the determination of the Kurdish forces makes it clear that this city cannot fall easily. It’s an epic, unlike any other fighting front ever seen against IS.”

The city of Kobane has seen continuous clashes between the Kurdish fighters of the Popular Protection Units (YPG) and militants of the Islamic State for 37 consecutive days now.
